Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung

Germany's public/statutory health insurance system, covering about 90% of the population.

GKV (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) is Germany's public health insurance system. About 90% of the German population is covered by GKV.

How it works:

  • Contributions are income-based (~14.6% of gross salary + supplementary premium, split 50/50 with employer)
  • Your share: roughly 8% of gross salary
  • Contributions are capped at ~€62,100/year gross
  • Non-working spouse and children are covered for free (Familienversicherung)

Coverage includes: Doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, mental health, dental (basic), maternity care, rehabilitation, preventive care, and Krankengeld after 6 weeks of sick leave.
